Self love is a journey. A journey full of twists and turns, and steps forwards and backwards. Just when you think you’re making real progress, life happens and leaves you back at square one. I want to help you move forward towards a sustainable, hell-ya, I’m AWESOME! type of self-love. 

Let’s begin by exploring the concept of self love and then get into the positive self love affirmations and how you can make them work for you!

Self Love 101

What is Self Love? 

According to the article Self-Love and What It Means, “…self-love is a state of appreciation for oneself that grows from actions that support our physical, psychological and spiritual growth.”  This means taking care of yourself in all dimensions of wellness: body, mind and spirit. 

Self-love also means prioritizing yourself, making your wellness your top priority. You probably have others to take care of, however, you won’t have the energy to do this if you aren’t taking care of yourself first. 

Why is Self Love so Important?

Why self-love is so important and how to cultivate it states that many psychological studies confirm that “…self-love and -compassion are key for mental health and well-being, keeping depression and anxiety at bay.”

Wow! This confirms it. Putting your needs first and being kind to yourself are key players in your health and wellness.

How can you use self love affirmations?

To get the most out of the self-love affirmations, first take some time to connect with your heart. This will allow you to truly connect with the positive affirmations. The idea is to experience the affirmations with all your senses. Take time to explore their relevance to your life.

How to do this: 

  1. Sit in a comfortable position
  2. Close your eyes and take some slow, deep breaths
  3. Once you are relaxed, place your hands over your heart
  4. Take a few moments to connect with your heart, filling it with light and energy 
  5. Cumulate feelings of love: think of loved ones, precious memories and moments
  6. Sit for a few moments in this state of pure love, let your heart radiate love
  7. Start with the affirmation “I love myself unconditionally.” Feel it with all your senses, let it sink in. What does this mean to you?
  8. After you get comfortable with this affirmation, move on. Add a few more each day. Spend time with each affirmation, exploring and savoring it.



Another powerful way to use self-love affirmations is mirroring. Stand in front of a mirror. Say the affirmation out loud while looking into your eyes. How does it make you feel? What emotions are coming up? Journaling may be a great way to explore these emotions and feelings. 

Connecting with the Universe


When you say the affirmations, say them out loud to the universe. Say them like you mean them, girl! Let the universe hear them and make them true for you. Make it a habit to repeat them daily to manifest the affirmations in your life. 

Love Yourself through Self-Care


What’s the best way to love yourself? To focus on your self-care. Self-care means taking some time each day to relax and rejuvenate by doing an activity that you love. Or it might just mean taking a break from your busy schedule and doing nothing. The important thing is to give your body and mind a break from daily, chronic stress.

To sum it all up, love for others starts at home. If you love yourself in a genuine way and feel happy and content, it’s much easier to pass kindness on to others. Moreover, I know if I’m feeling good about myself, I’m much more likely to be kind and have patience with those around me. We are all connected and what we put out there, we get back. Right?
